How To Earn Your Drivers License in California

Earning your driving privilege can be challenging, but knowing the steps required to obtaining a license shouldn't be. For complete information about licensing requirements, your local DMV website always has the most up to date and correct information. Find your local DMV at the Driving Links DMV Lookup.

How To Get Your License in South Bay

Drivers Ed: Earn Your Permit

Our DMV Approved online drivers ed class is interactive, easy to understand, and will best prepare your teen to be a knowledgeable driver and pass their permit test. Finish as early as 15½ years old; when you've passed our course we mail you the drivers ed certificate you need at the DMV in order to take your written DMV permit test. With your certificate in hand: go to the DMV, take the DMV permit test, take a vision test, and pay a fee to the DMV. Pass and you go home with your California Learner's permit.

Behind the Wheel Training

After you have your permit, the state of California requires teen drivers to complete a minimum of 6 hours in-car drivers training with a licensed DMV driving school. The majority or students take between 6-20 hours of driving school lessons; each lesson is taught in 2-hour blocks over several weeks or months. Areas taught during the behind the wheel lessons include: residential driving, city street driving, parking, freeway, canyon driving, parking, and DMV test concepts.

Pass the DMV Drive Test

Not only do you need a minimum of 6-hours of driving instruction, over the next 6 months after you earn your permit you need to practice a minimum of 50 hours with a parent or guardian (including 10 hours at night). When you've practiced at least 6 months, completed your driver training requirement, feel confident, and are at least 16 years old; call the DMV to schedule your driving test appointment and go to the local DMV to take your drive test. Pass the drive test and you go home with a temporary, provisional license that day.
